Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why are chef’s jackets white?

The white colour of chef’s jackets dates back to the 19th century, when a French master chef named Marie-Antoine Carême made it standard practice for staff in a professional working kitchen to wear white uniforms.

White was chosen because it made dirt easier to spot, and because the public associated white coats with skilled professionals such as scientists and doctors.

Many of today’s professional cooks honour tradition and wear chef whites, although black jackets and other coloured chef jackets are popular now too.

Why do chefs wear double-breasted jackets?

Chefs wear double-breasted jackets to protect the front of their body from burns from splashing liquids. A double-breasted jacket also enables a chef to conceal stains, by reversing the way they fasten the lapels together.

How do I get a white chef’s jacket clean?

Keeping a white chef’s jacket clean is a challenge! Many chef’s jackets are durable enough to be laundered in a washing machine at high temperatures, which should get rid of most, if not all, stains.

A good tip is to treat any stains as soon as they happen, with cold or warm water and a clean cloth. Avoid using hot water as it will bake the stain into the fibres.

If the jacket needs a proper laundering in the washing machine, make sure you soak the garment in warm water first. This will break up the stains and stop them from getting embedded in the fabric. You might also want to use special pre-wash stain-removing products (e.g. Vanish) before you run the washing machine.

If these methods fail, you can always take your jacket to a professional dry cleaners.

Can I tumble-dry my chef’s jacket?

Tumble-drying a chef’s jacket isn’t recommended, as the heat will bake any stains into the fabric and it will be much more difficult to get them out. It’s better to hang a damp jacket out to dry.

Can I bleach my chef’s jacket?

You should avoid bleaching your chef’s jacket. Bleach can weaken clothing fibres and discolour the material.
